Rising inflation, elevated crude oil prices and currency volatility are emerging as risks to consumption and investment in India, economists said, warning that the combination could weigh on demand and squeeze corporate margins.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, traded above $109 a barrel on Tuesday as investors weighed escalating conflicts in the Middle East and Eastern Europe against strong Persian Gulf energy flows.

Currency markets have also been volatile, with the Indian rupee weakening to ₹96.85 per US dollar on October 7. Following market operations by the Reserve Bank of India to stabilise the currency, the rupee was trading at ₹94.93 per dollar on Tuesday.

Domestically, inflationary pressures have also intensified. India’s consumer price inflation rose to 5.54% in September 2026 from 4.83% in August, while wholesale inflation accelerated to 11.39% from 9.92% over the same period. The Reserve Bank of India also raised interest rates by 25 basis points in October, adding to concerns over borrowing costs.

Economists said India is better placed to weather the uncertainty than several emerging and developed economies, supported by domestic consumption, fiscal prudence and strong corporate balance sheets.

However, for Indian businesses, the combination of risks poses a serious threat to demand as well as margins.

“The inflation has been eating into the disposable incomes of households, albeit slowly, as producers have not passed on full input cost increases to consumers,” said Ranen Banerjee, partner and leader, Economic Advisory, PwC India.

The immediate concern for India Inc is whether higher prices will weaken consumer spending in the second half of the financial year.

Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at Bank of Baroda, said GDP growth is expected to be around 7.2% in FY27, with much of it supported by the performance in the first two quarters. Growth in the third and fourth quarters, however, will depend considerably on consumption.

Sabnavis said the festive season would be a crucial test of demand. Companies may be reluctant to raise prices significantly for fear of hurting sales, but absorbing some of the increase in input costs could put pressure on margins.

Inflation and borrowing costs threaten household spending

Further increases in interest rates remain a risk if inflationary and geopolitical pressures persist. The extent of any future monetary tightening will depend on the RBI’s assessment of the inflation outlook and its policy decisions.

“Household disposable incomes would be further impinged by the increase in interest rates as households having floating-rate mortgages would have to pay higher EMIs. New consumption loans will become more expensive and the ability of households to borrow and service mortgages and consumption loans at those rates will also be constrained,” Banerjee said.

The impact on demand is likely to be broad-based, Banerjee said, although essential categories such as food, transport and medicines, along with premium and luxury products, could be relatively better placed.

For companies, the challenge will be to balance cost recovery against the risk of losing sales. Sabnavis said the extent to which manufacturers pass on higher input costs would become clearer in the current quarter.

“Margins will need to be watched closely. If companies are unable to pass on higher input costs to consumers, their margins will come under pressure,” he said.

Elevated crude prices and currency volatility could make that trade-off more difficult, particularly for businesses dependent on imported inputs.

Higher rates could weigh on private capex

According to RBI’s September Bulletin, capital expenditure by India’s private corporate sector is estimated at ₹3.2 lakh crore in FY27, compared with ₹2.6 lakh crore in FY26. The estimate is based on the pipeline of ongoing projects financed through banks and financial institutions, external commercial borrowings and initial public offerings.

Sabnavis said that investment will remain strong, although concentrated in a limited number of sectors.

“Investment decisions are based on long-term considerations, not merely on what is happening today. Investment will continue to be strong this year, but it will not be broad-based,” he said, pointing to data centres, power, machinery, metals and refineries as key drivers.

Banerjee, however, cautioned that sustained inflation and higher interest rates could weaken demand and reduce industrial capacity utilisation, prompting companies to defer investment decisions.

He also highlighted a policy dilemma for the RBI. Inflation is being driven by supply-side pressures rather than excess demand, but the central bank’s inflation-targeting mandate could require monetary tightening. This could further weaken consumption and investment even as businesses continue to face elevated input costs.

Banerjee added that a quick resolution of the ongoing conflicts could ease inflationary pressures.
